As you may or may not know, one of the raddest parts of buying the Wolf Larsen album, Quiet at the Kitchen Door, is that Wolf is donating 15% in support of the Girl Effect. To learn more, check out this fancy little video we made to explain.
Today we made our first investment of $150!
We will be donating $150 to Lotus Outreach’s Blossom Bus Project, which will provide one girl in Mewat, Haryana, a state in northwestern India, with daily transportation to and from school for an entire year. And that is all thanks to YOU buying the record!
Lotus Outreach is a US-based non-profit organization that works to ensure “the education, healthy and safety of at-risk women and children in the third world.” In particular, they work with local people and organizations to deliver services on a grassroots level.
The Blossom Bus is a pilot project is based in Mewat, a rural part of India, where the female literacy rate is only 2%. The project will hire 12 local mini-buses to transport Muslim minority girls to school, as transportation is a primary barrier to continuing education. The hope is to demonstrate “reliability to protective parents as well as set an example of responsible governance to local authorities.”
So how is this the Girl Effect? Well, supporting the education of girls helps delay marriage and childbirth, makes it more likely they will educate their children, and encourages a more active role for women in society.
See the ripple effect? You invest in one female singer/songwriter and that investment ends up supporting the future of another girl who otherwise might never had the chance to go to school.
In the future, we are hoping to donate $100 every Thursday to a different project or organization that supports the girl effect. However, we can only do that if YOU help. The more records we sell, the more money there is to give away. So please: share this album, this idea, this meme.
THAT is the Girl Effect.
